The Power of Camp!
Allison Kleinman, Director of the Jack and Shirley Silver Center for Special Needs, JCC Manhattan
I went to Camp Poyntelle for 10 years - the best summers of my life. I was far from home and I felt set free. Every morning my twin sister and I put on a different pair of umbros and a bat mitvah t-shirt and ran up to line-up to do it all again. I never took one summer day for granted. I'd start getting sad to leave before the second month even began.
Everything you needed was right there. We walked everywhere we wanted to go - up the same dirt paths I can still travel down today with my eyes closed. I was free to run around and try new things. I was exposed to new, complicated and intense relationships and I learned about trust, empathy, Judaism and community. I think Camp was my first love and it certainly inspired my career. I'm so grateful today to work in such an inclusive and vibrant community at JCC Manhattan.
